ADULT PSYCHIATRY

Adult psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry that specializes in the study, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of psychopathological disorders of adults. A Psychiatrist must evaluate patients to determine whether or not their symptoms are the result of a medical illness, a combination of medical and psychological disorders, or a strictly psychological one. In order to do this, the psychiatrist may employ the psychiatric examination itself, full history intake, a physical exam and ask for further tests such as blood work and scans. Psychiatrists usually prescribe medication, follow up continuously and may also use psychotherapy in their sessions or they may refer to a psychologist depending on the disorder. Individuals with Psychiatric Disorders are usually seen weekly, bi-weekly or monthly according to the diagnosis and prognosis of the illness.
